Ampere-Hour Unit of capacity of a cell/battery. Capacity is defined as the product of the discharge rate in ampere and the discharge time in hour.

Battery Pack One or more cells inter-connected to form the standby power supply for an emergency lighting system.

Charge The operation which inputs electrical energy to a cell/battery.

Charge Rate The rate of current supplied to a cell/battery.

Cycle Life The number of cycles a cell/battery can run under specific conditions, while delivering specified minimum capacity.

Emergency Duration The duration the emergency light will operate from the battery pack that is fitted in the emergency light fitting after power failure.

Emergency Exit An exit which is intended to be used during an emergency.

Emergency Lighting Lighting provided to come on when the mains supply fail.

Luminaire A light fitting which distribute light given by a lamp.

Maintained Emergency Lighting An emergency lighting system in which the lighting lamp is in operation all the time i.e the same lamp is lighted from the main power supply and during a power failure.

Mounting Height The vertical distance between the luminaire and the floor.

Non-Maintained Emergency Lighting An emergency lighting system in which the lighting lamp is in operation only when there is a power failure.

Normal Lighting All fixed luminaire light fitting that operate from power supply.

Rechargeable Battery  A storage cell that can be recharged by reversing the internal chemical reaction.

Self-Contained Emergency Light Fitting The emergency light unit that is complete with its own battery, lamps and circuitry which require only the mains supply connection for it to operate.

Sustained Emergency Lighting An emergency lighting system which contained two lamps whereby one of the lamp is always lighted. One lamp is lighted from the main power supply when supply is healthy and the other from the emergency battery backup during a power failure. 

Switched Live A live power supply from the main supply that is switchable.

Unswitched Live A live power supply from the main supply that is not switchable.
